What’s In Your Heart?

“But Yahweh said to Samuel, Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 WEB

(World English Bible)

There is so much that I can unpack in this scripture but the main focus that I want to direct you to is this: “but Yahweh looks at the heart”.. What’s in your heart?

So often us as humans take things that people say and/or do at face value! Someone can tell you that they love you and just because they have said it; we instantly believe them without looking and seeking deeper clarity! We fall head over heels in love with someone just because they spoke those 3 words. I Love You. Do we ever look at the motive behind those words? Do we ever look at the heart of the person; who has spoken these words?

Yahweh (God) sent Samuel on a mission to find Him a man after His own heart! Someone that would serve Him, follow His commandments and not seek out His own personal gain like Saul. When someone makes the claim that they love you; do you seek out the motive behind it or are you taking them at their word? Often times words are just words if there isn’t a visual motive behind it.

What do I mean? Does their actions; follow the words they have spoken? Do they act like a person in love? Do they act like you are the “apple of their eye”? Will they stop everything to come to your aid; when you are in need? Will they lay their life down for yours? Will they cry out to God for you; for your life in the wee hours?

1 Samuel 15:10 Real Love doesn’t just speak; it performs. Samuel had real love for Saul; you can see it in how he spoke and how he performed; his actions followed his speech.

But even though he had this love for Samuel; he continued his obedience to God!

1 Samuel 16:7 gives us firsthand knowledge of what Samuel was doing in his obedience to God. He was sent to find a replacement for Saul. Saul had made the decision to get out of covenant with God. He stopped being fully lead by His voice, he stopped listening to His commandments.

How many of us claim to love God, be His; but soon as someone professes their love for us; we turn our back on God? As soon as we reach a certain worldly height (titles); we stopped following God. As soon as we get the money, power and fame; we turn our backs on God.

The only kind of relationships that would warrant this kind of behavior is ungodly relationships! Relationships that aren’t equally yoked! Anyone that claims to be of God and one of His children wouldn’t take you out of covenant with God. They won’t place demands on you that take you out of the will of God. What is the motive? Did we forget who our number one enemy is?

Did we forget his overall purpose in this earth? Did we forget that he is always roaming to and fro searching for those that he can devour? Did we forget that he can impose thoughts and implant the wrong people into our lives? This is why we need God! This is why we need his Holy Spirit; His hedge fence of protection; His warring angels! We aren’t equipped to deal with this joker on our own; this is why so many fall and get trapped!! Who is in your corner? Who is on your team? This matters more than you know! Will they go to war for you? Intercede! Intercession! Spiritual warfare is real!! Do they cry out for you? Wolves prey! Sheep pray!

So many people are under the impression that covenant relationships aren’t important; that obedience to God isn’t important! The enemy doesn’t care anything about you and he will stop at nothing to get you off track! He will invade your mind, thoughts, body and soul and guess what all because you allowed him in!! You spoke a word of defeat! You allowed the wrong person in! You were disobedient! You went down the wrong path; took a detour; got distracted!! Saw someone that “looked good” and fell for the trap!

Questions to ponder:

Who is leading you?

What is leading you?

Where are they leading you?

Why are they leading you?

How are they leading you?

What’s in your heart?

Is it love?

Anger?

Hate?

Compassion?

Empathy?

Envy?

Jealousy?

Offense?

It’s time to take a hard look in the mirror; whom do you see looking back at you? Reflect on that for just a few moments; take it all in. Then go deeper; look within. Does your outward appearance, motives, thoughts, etc, match your heart posture?

1 Samuel 15:10: “Then Yahweh’s word came to Samuel, saying, It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments. Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.” WEB

1 Samuel 15:22-23 “Samuel said, “Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying Yahweh’s voice? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected Yahweh’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.” WEB

1 Samuel 15:26 “Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

1 Samuel 15:34 “Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.” WEB
